Season 9 Activities
There are three big announcements for Season 9: 1) Transit of Metis, a full-evening work by Co-artistic Director Natascha Greenwalt, will premiere at the Erickson Theater in May, 2) a partnership with Seattle Demo Project to continue the development of Co-artistic Director Christin Call’s new work What is Home an Obscure Kingdom an Opera Buffa It’s You Always You, 3) beginning in 2017 we will be fully operating as an independent 501(c)3 organization.
Transit of Metis will be Coriolis’s second full- length production, premiering May 5-7 and 12-14, 2017 at Erickson Theater here in Seattle. This multidisciplinary dance work utilizes new and existing choreography by Natascha, with its “gymnastic strength with elegant form” and “distinctly contemporary take on ballet’s extreme control and discipline” (Seattle Times). The Greek myth of Metis serves as a launching point to tell a story of self-realization in the process of recovery after experiences that have left us feeling worthless and incapacitated. This piece will feature our largest cast of classically trained dancers yet. Violinist Julia Gish and singer Sarah Davis will be working off of a score ranging from Puccini to original works by Matt Holmes and Daniel Brigman. Rehearsal time for this work is generously supported through a residency at Exit Space School of dance.
Coriolis Dance is also partnering with Seattle Demo Project this season, an artist/architect collective that revitalizes houses set to be demolished with art installations, artist residencies, and community engagement events around the issues of housing development currently dominating Seattle. During the summer Christin received one of these residencies and generated a variety of material through photography, installation, graffiti poetry, and dance film. The first of these dance films was recently screened at Northwest Film Forum’s Dance Film Challenge in conjunction with Velocity Dance Center. In partnering with SDP, Christin and Director of Photography Cainan Martens will continue What is Home by producing 2-4 new short dance films with a diverse cast of dancers, actors, and original scoring by local artist Yellow Dragon.
With all this artistic activity, it’s no less important to note a big organizational milestone for Coriolis. We are now a federally recognized 501(c)3 organization. This means we are separating from our fiscal sponsor, Shunpike, and beginning in 2017 all of your dollars will go directly to Coriolis. Please consider giving us a jumpstart in our independence by donating to this campaign. All donations from this campaign will be processed in the new year and attributed to the 2017 tax season as we transfer all our bookkeeping in-house, becoming a fully autonomous entity! Now more than ever, your contribution helps us dream big but do practical things like rent rehearsal space, generate promotional materials, create costumes, and, most importantly, pay our artists for rehearsal and performance time.
Our goal for this campaign is to raise $10,000 between today and January 16, 2017. Your donations goes towards the costs of developing new work, producing work, getting the word out, and compensating artists. Thank you so much for your support.
Here are some of the ways we can utilize your generous gift:
With (5) $10 donations we can rent space for one full rehearsal of What is Home.
With (3) $50 donations we can rent 3 hours of tech time in the theater.
With (2) $100 donations we can book a one way ticket for a guest artist.
With a $500 donation we can print event postcards and posters, as well as poster distribution fees.
With a $1,000 donation we can purchase costume material for the full cast of Transit of Metis.
With a $5,000 donation we can rent a theater for two weekends and cover equipment rental costs.
With a $10,000 donation we can pay all dancer performance stipends for Transit of Metis.
I want to thank you for your support of Coriolis. Whether you have given your time, money, or Instagram likes, we have all noticed your generosity. There are not enough words to express the gratitude we have for how you enable us to constantly grow. Please continue on this transformative journey with us and pledge your donation today!
